Women + Girls Research Alliance hosts The Story of the Charlotte Girl Book Club
Renee Watson's Piecing Me Together
Jade, a high-school junior, believes she must get out of her poor neighborhood if she's ever going to succeed. Her mother tells her to take advantage of every opportunity that comes her way, and this is exactly what Jade does. She accepts a scholarship to a mostly-white private school and even attends Saturday morning test- prep opportunities. However, some prospects, like an invitation to join Women to Women, feel more belittling than helpful, as it is really for “at risk” black girls from “bad” neighborhoods. And just because Maxine, her college-graduate mentor, is black doesn't mean she truly understands Jade. A current, relevant and compelling story, Jade shows these successful women about the real world, the complexities of race and gender, and reminds us that when everything works together, we often have a healthier whole.
