The Story of the Charlotte Girl: Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak

Women + Girls Research Alliance presents The Story of the Charlotte Girl Book Club.

Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak

From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda Sordino quickly realizes that speaking up for yourself can come at a cost. Busting an end-of-the summer party by calling the cops, Melinda becomes the outcast of the school. Refusing to confess her reason for calling the police, her classmates do not speak, let alone listen to her.  Unable to verbalize what happened, Melinda nearly stops speaking altogether, expressing her voice through the art she produces for Mr. Freeman's class. This expression slowly helps Melinda finally acknowledge what really happened at that terrible party: she was raped by an upperclassman who still attends Merryweather High. Her healing process has just begun when she has another violent encounter with him. This time, however, Melinda fights back, refuses to be silent, and shows the importance of speaking up for oneself.
